Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Side-by-Side

They are the most commonly used type of double pushchair that can typically seat 2 children together. They are usually wider than single pushchairs. This can make them less agile on the footpaths. It is also difficult to navigate between kerbs when the car seat is in place. The extra width allows them to move more easily through doorways, and they are more evenly distributed so that it is easier to carry around on your back.

They can be used as twin prams from birth and many models can accommodate a carrycot or two car seats. Some can even be converted to one-mode with an additional basket (like the Cybex Venus).

One of the most impressive examples of this is the Bugaboo Donkey 5 which, in Twin Mode, allows you to fit the rear seat and carrycot side-by-side. This creates a fully enclosed twin space, which is perfect for newborns. It is not as lightweight like other options, but it's really cleverly designed.

Its innovative frame expands widthways to accommodate two seats and you can use it as a twin from birth by incorporating the addition of two newborn cocoons (PS59 each) that create enclosed lie-flat spaces for babies. It is also possible to use it as an individual mode with only one child due to a large shopping basket that sits behind the seat. Tandem

If you're planning to have twins you will need a tandem pushchair. This will allow each child to sit and see each other. They are great for trips to the zoo, as children can watch the animals together. They are also great for parents who must keep an eye on their toddler and the other on their baby, as they can see both of them at the same time.

Some tandem pushchairs offer ultra flexibility since they can be converted back to single mode. This is especially useful when you are planning to have more than two children (or in the event that your child who is the oldest does not require a buggy any longer). This means that you won't be left with an empty pushchair car seat that you need to store away, which can be costly.

The Cybex Venus, for example, can be used either in double or mono mode. Its frame can expand to accommodate an additional seat. This isn't the lightest of pushchairs, however it comes with a large basket for shopping that is placed behind the front seat when in double mode (and at the back of the seat when it's mono mode). The seats can be placed to face each other or one could be placed higher so that it can look over the other and observe what they are doing.

Other double tandem pushchairs travel systems like the Joolz Geo 3 can seat one on top of the other, or side-by-side. The compact, sleek frame makes it easy to maneuver through doors and aisles of supermarkets. Certain models can be used on rough terrain or as an exercise walk due to their large rear wheels and four-wheel suspension.

A tandem pushchair can also be used to carry two carrycots or a car and buggy seat. This allows you to build an entire travel system from the beginning and save money on additional purchases. Be aware that tandems are heavier and longer, and can be less stable when bumping up kerbs or navigating uneven surfaces. They also need dismantling to fit into cars.
