Cylinder locks are usually found on uPVC doors, but can be utilized on other types of doors. They work by using a key that unlock a cylinder case which is then revealed with pins that can be aligned with the pins in the lock body, allow them to rotate a revolving cam, thus opening the door. Euro cylinders are available with up to six pins. External and internal doors require different levels of security.

Selecting the right cylinder for your needs is essential; it depends on how your doors and handles are utilized. For instance, doors that are external should be fitted with an extra secure cylinder, while doors inside can be secured with an ordinary cylinder. Certain cylinders are equipped with additional features that can improve security, for instance, anti-drill or anti-bump properties.

A euro cylinder needs to be properly measured to ensure it's the right size for your door. The cylinder must be measured from the screw hole at the center to the ends of the cylinder. This includes the thumb turn, in the event that one is present. It is best to do this with the lock in place however, when this isn't feasible, you can take it off and remove it to measure. It is important to ensure that there is no cylinder that extends beyond the handle or escutcheon. This could make it vulnerable to snapping lock attacks.

Most modern cylinders are constructed with anti-drill and bump resistance features built into their design. These are designed to reduce the chances of an attack by causing the cylinder to rotate in an opposite direction. This will help deflect the attack, and ensure your door is secure.

There are cylinders that are constructed to resist snapping. This is a common attack on cylinders. These spring cassettes are specially designed to be used with sprung multipoint locks, they will not fit multipoint handles that are not sprung and you will need to have a hole specifically cut in your backplate in order for them to fit (please check the image for a technical diagram). These cassettes can be used as a replacement to damaged or missing cassettes on the backplate of uPVC door handles. They are sold as one unit. They come with a square cut out that accommodates an 8mm shaft.
