The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure the next generation would be able to read the words. Many words were replaced by foreign words. For instance dui, which was Bengali for verandah, was used.

Origins

The early history of Toto which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic expansion. In the beginning, Toto made goods to meet the demand for modern, brand new urban housing. To do this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to profit from sales and new markets. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products from other manufacturers to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the firm's global market share.

In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that are water-related. The album opens with a strong and pounding sound with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. The album also contains jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that mixes folk with distortion AOR and should sound totally wrong, but is incredibly effective.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes took a turn for the worse. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and 안전놀이터 (Saveyoursite.Date) bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
