The band started out as a quartet, and they recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster, but it was not without its problems. Record companies placed the band on the place with the directive "give us an album that's a smash or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on them to give it. This song blends folk and distortion AOR that could sound completely wrong but actually is very effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed towards the negative. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career. The band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as well-liked as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
